Some incidents of violence may not be included here due to the large number of death reports. HINSDALE, ILLINOIS This city less than an hour from Chicago is so white it could be Norway or Sweden. it is home to politicians, major league baseball players and television actors attracted by the tranquility of a village as American as apple pie . Almost as if to reaffirm, dozens of stars and stripes flags fly continuously from the porches of his many mansions. The Ferraris , BMWs, Hummers and Jaguars passing at all hours through the streets confirms their privileged status as one of the 50 richest towns richest country in the world. If it were an independent nation, its per capita income would make the most prosperous in the world, with $104,000 average salary, more than even the oil emirate of Qatar. Not everyone can live here, where there are houses that can cost $10 million. Much less minorities: the 2010 census dictates that 90 percent of its residents are Caucasian, 6.4 Asian and only 3.5 percent Hispanic. If there are Mexicans in Hinsdale is because they usually come to cut the grass. “Honey, the houses here are as good as the imagination. The sky is the limit, “says Janet, who owns a two story house and 10/4 on the corner of Phillipa Drive, one of its main streets. “Everyone knows everyone. It is not easy to be strangers.” Perhaps factors such as what happened the day before the presidential election of 2008 is even more bizarre and revealing of all places, the cartel led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman chose this billionaire suburb to establish two bases of operations from which they controlled the distribution and sale of drugs throughout the Midwestern United States. It ended up being a crucial event, which today is the foundation on which stands the most important trial that the U.S. government has against “El Chapo” and Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada in the North Court of Illinois, which was updated with new charges in February. It’s the same case that tried to Vicente Zambada Niebla, and that would have tried Arturo Beltran Leyva, if he survived a raid launched by the Marines against him. It is also a case that offers a glimpse at the penetration of the the richest corners of the United States by Mexican cartels operators under the camouflage of professionals. Bocus Michelle had just returned from voting in the presidential election on November 4, 2008, when he heard the sirens on the street that seems taken directly from the set of the television series “Desperate Housewives”. Looking out the window of his mansion, he could see men DEA jackets assault the residence a few meters away, at number 42. The house became vacant when the owner died of old age, and i was offered for rent by their children. “I never knew who’s rented,” says Bocus, Street resident for 35 years. “I never saw any Mexicans here.” But there were Mexicans. A group of them, including siblings twins Margarito and Pedro Flores, operators working for the Sinaloa Cartel and the Beltran Leyva when they were allies in the distribution of narcotics, weapons and money across the United States. In Mexico, the news of the raid spread almost overnight. That same day the plane of Interior Secretary Juan Camilo Mouriño crashed. But the U.S. Department of Justice struck one of the hardest blows ever at two Mexican cartels. “On average, the Flores brothers received 500 to 2000 kilograms of cocaine a month, sometimes getting all or most of the total Guzman Loera and Zambada Garcia (…) and at other times of the Beltran Leyva cartel had,” said Washington then in a press release. The operation was a large scale. And according to the DEA, was documented as allowing street vendors to link into half a dozen U.S. cities directly with Mexican drug lords. “The Flores sold large quantities of cocaine and heroin to wholesale customers in Cincinnati, Columbus, Detroit, Milwaukee, New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC , Vancouver and other cities, “stated in the press release. Bocus said never to have met the Flores brothers, who rented the house for over a year without anyone noticing. He never heard noises, parties or bizarre behavior, such as that commonly associated with drug traffickers. Margarito and Peter were part of the landscape. Only on the day of the raid did a strange thing happened: Bocus computer was seized . “I saw displayed on my screen information, with names and dollar amounts Mexico. There were names, addresses and documents . It was taken by the police,” he recalls. Along with that, another house was seized in Hinsdale. But they were the only ones. That same day the U.S. government found homes and warehouses of the Sinaloa Cartel in twenty directions from Chicago, on streets with names like Racine, Erie, Trenton and Bode, in suburban Romeoville, Plainsfield, Palos Hills, and even in the same city. Jack Ryley, DEA special agent in charge of the Midwestern United States, says it is a tactic that Mexicans learned from their predecessors in Colombia. “They blend in very well. They speak the language and are culturally acceptable to how they behave in the community, “says the agent. - Even in a neighborhood as white as Hinsdale? -Yes. Aren’t they great at what they do (camouflage)? We found homes for the cartels that had everything: Christmas lights, cut grass all the time … and when we got into the home and opened the door, we found 500 kilos of cocaine and millions of dollars. Nothing else. ACAPULCO, GUERRERO Two brothers were found in their taxi, both handcuffed, with signs of torture, and beheaded. Two cards with messages were left with the bodies. ![]() URUAPAN, MICHOACAN Gunmen in two Suburban’s attacked a gasoline station here with Molotov cocktails, taking all of the cash from the employees at gunpoint.
